This chapel was commissioned by the Adornes, a prominent Bruges merchant family of Genovese origin. In 1470 Anselm Adornes collected one of his sons (the father had no fewer than sixteen children) in Padua before setting off on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Upon his return to Bruges Anselm decided to build an exact copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The result can be said to be remarkable, indeed!
